چکیده

We apply a semi-classical approach of handling waves as quasiparticle gas in a slowly varying flow – analogous to ray tracing – to calculate the Alfvén wave transmission parameters, the resulting cross-helicity of the waves and the scatteringcentre compression ratio, for cases where the shock thickness is large enough for the turbulent waves in the plasma to see the transition of the background flow parameters as smooth and slowly varying. For nonrelativistic shocks the wave transmission produces similar effects on the downstream turbulence and the scattering-centre compression ratio as does the transmission through a step shock: the downstream Alfvén waves propagate predominantly towards the shock in the local plasma frame and, thus, the scattering-centre compression ratio is larger than the gas compression ratio. For thick relativistic shocks, however, we find qualitative differences with respect to the step-shock case: for low-Alfvénic-Mach-number shocks the downstream waves propagate predominantly away from the shock, and the scattering-centre compression ratio is lower than that of the gas. Thus, when taken into account, the Alfvén wave transmission can decrease the efficiency of the first-order Fermi acceleration in a thick relativistic shock.

Cosmic ray acceleration at parallel relativistic shocks in the presence of finite-amplitude magnetic field perturbations

We study the first-order Fermi acceleration process at parallel shock waves by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A ’realistic’ model of the magnetic field turbulence is applied involving sinusoidal waves imposed on the background mean field parallel to the shock normal. The finite-amplitude magnetic field perturbations lead to locally oblique field configurations at the shock and the respective...

Gamma-Ray Burst Prompt Emission: Implications from Shock Acceleration Theory

The principal paradigm for gamma-ray bursts suggest that the prompt transient gamma-ray signal arises from multiple shocks internal to the relativistic expansion. This paper illustrates some properties of diffusive acceleration at relativistic shocks that pertain to GRB models, providing interpretation of the BATSE/EGRET data. Using a standard Monte Carlo simulation, computations of the spectra...

Acceleration time scale for the first - order Fermi acceleration in relativistic shock waves

The acceleration time scale for the process of first-order Fermi acceleration in rela-tivistic shock waves with oblique magnetic field configurations is investigated by the method of Monte Carlo particle simulations. We discuss the differences in derivation of the cosmic ray acceleration time scale for non-relativistic and relativistic shocks. We demonstrate the presence of correlation between ...

The Cosmic Ray Precursor of Relativistic Collisionless Shocks: a Missing Link in Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows

Collisionless shocks are commonly argued to be the sites of cosmic ray (CR) acceleration. We study the influence of CRs on weakly magnetized relativistic collisionless shocks and apply our results to external shocks in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. The common view is that the transverse Weibel instability (TWI) generates a small-scale magnetic field that facilitates collisional coupling and...

Diffusive Synchrotron Radiation from Relativistic Shocks of Gamma-Ray Burst Sources

The spectrum of electromagnetic emission generated by relativistic electrons scattered on small-scale random magnetic fields is considered within the context of gamma-ray bursts. This problem has been considered previously by Medvedev (2000). However, Medvedev’s treatment contained several errors that are rectified here. It is shown that a correct treatment of the random nature of the smallscal...
